When parents get in touch

You do not need to have all the answers before asking for help.

Parents often contact us because something about their child's communication does not feel quite where they expected it to be.

An enquiry is not a diagnosis. It is simply a first step towards understanding what support may be appropriate.

Reasons parents often get in touch

  • Your toddler is using fewer words than you expected for their age
  • Your child is not yet combining words into short phrases
  • They rely heavily on pointing, gesture or taking you to what they want
  • You are unsure whether to wait, seek advice or arrange more individual support

Existing support options

Support built around the child and the parent.

We focus on practical strategies that can carry into everyday life at home rather than treating therapy as something that only happens during an appointment.

Questions parents ask

Finding an appropriate next step

Do I need an NHS referral?

No. Families can contact Small Talk Club directly about private support. If your child is already known to NHS Speech & Language Therapy, you can tell us that in the suitability form.

Which areas do you cover?

Small Talk Club supports families across Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian and West Lothian. Your postcode or local area helps us understand whether the available support is practical for your family.

Is Little Talkers the same as 1:1 therapy?

No. Little Talkers is a small-group parent and child programme. Bespoke 1:1 support is available on a limited basis for children who may need a different format.

What if I am not sure whether my child needs speech therapy?

You do not need to decide that before getting in touch. The suitability process is designed to understand what you are noticing and help identify an appropriate next step without promising or assuming a diagnosis.
